Paying more attention to the behaviours

When we talk about gamification, there is a lot of talk about the motivational systems and the types of players/users associated with them, from the classic Richard Bartle’s system to more modern motivational systems like the one that use Gamification nation from Andrzej Marczewski or the spanish proposal based on the McClelland’s motivational model that Euroresearch made. I will talk about all these diferents models on another occasion.

Here we can see the classic distribution of player types according to Richard Bartle.

The value of the users’ motivation is undeniable, but in this case I do not want to analice the motivators of the people as the chains of associated behaviors, since these are not usually contemplated in a functional way as I think they deserve.

When we talk about behavior modification, we immediately think about techniques of so-called Black Hats, but me as a behavioral psychologist I usually talk more about chains of behaviors associated with an action or learning than the motivational factors that underlie it. Mainly because within behaviorism we do not always consider that a motivation is necessary to perform a behavior but by conditioning we can implement behaviours without having to appeal to the motivation of the subject, it is true that detecting the motivations of the users it will help us greatly but it is not essential.

Another problem that we find with companies is when they define their needs, they appeal to large motivational concepts and appear words such as engagement, commitment, loyalty, proactivity, brand ambassadors, proficiency, affiliation, etc. Big words that you have to down them to earth and know exactly which behaviours the client wants from their workers or users.

This is something that during my degree my teacher of «Analysis and behavior modification» used to told us, «do not ask what he feels but what he does». And this is very functional, ask the company What do you want your client to do?

Paying attention to behaviours is not what is usually done but it is where we act at the very end, that is why becomes necessary to know behaviorism. Motivation is a drive to our actions, but defining, controlling and educating the actions of a person can help us to detect their motivations and even influence in the motivation of the subject.

About how behavior modification and behaviorism works, I will include different entries in the future because if you have not study it it’s easy not to see the scope that it can have.
