Gamification World Congress GWC 2016

The 26th and 27th of October I had the opportunity to attend the Gamification World Congress GWC 2016. For those of you that don’t know what they are, I am talking about the biggest congress in Europe about gamification and not sure about the entire world.

The truth is that you can find there the most recognized experts around the world, people like Kevin Werbach, Yu-Kai Chou, An Coppens, Melinda Jacobs, Pete Jenkins and many more.

The amount of attendees to this congress of course are not comparable to those ones related with videogames or mobiles, but taken into consideration that gamification is a more specific issue (We will see later on that indeed it is not as specific) the amount of assistants are between 1000 and 2000 people each year that it is not a small number and it gives you the opportunity to meet other companies and even find clients to your company.

But even knowing that networking is important it is not (at least for me) the main reason to go there. The main object was to know diferents work experiences, diferents ways to understand gamification and find how actual tops speakers give us some approaches and solutions using gamification.

Due the first day were composed by workshops, we had the opportunity to work with other attendants the mechanics that the speakers proposed to us and I really think that this first day was the most rewarding of both. First because to follow the workshops gives you the opportunity to understand what the speakers want to show you and second, it allows you to work with people out of your comfort circle. It was really revealing to see someone, maybe with less knowledge of gamification than me that didn’t give things for granted, and that I had to explain and sometimes convince them with my option.

Another important point to remark was the great opportunity of having a little chat with the Tops of this area, I would like to highlight that maybe because gamification is not widespread or that maybe because all gamifiers are close people 😉 , the truth was that every speaker weren’t reluctant to our questions and they really were willing to spend some time with you and share their knowledge. This maybe can seems anecdotic but I don’t really think so, having the opportunity of deepen into the concepts of their systems allows you to reach a higher level of knowledge. So if you attend a workshop and you have the chance to speak with them, you can’t let the opportunity go.

What I wrote above about specific, it needs an aclaration. The gamification can be applied to virtually every single environment, at the GWC you could find many different speakers from environments as differents as education, health, television, industry, banks, videogames development, fast food companies, marketing, Human resources, and many more. In each of them you could find great results using the gamification, so I really think that you don’t need more proofs to see the functionality of gamification. When you have a tool that can be applied to enterprises with such a diferent needs, seems clear that you should know how to use it.

The only drawback that I could find in these GWC 2016 were some technical or organisational problems that appeared. Like the intervention from Yu-Kai Chou, the organisation didn’t give him the pictures he needed so he had to improvise a little his speech. For my that was a big mistake but Mr. Chou was, of course, able to solve it and it was a great intervention. But now I have the doubt about what he really wanted to tell us.

Despite the little failures that you could find, the congress was great. My recommendation is to attend the nexts GWC 2017 if you like gamification, and try to talk with as many people as you can, be close to the speakers and try to catch each piece of information.

See you next year.
